Air conditioning furnace filters protect your health and the sensitive components of your AC system. Your blower fan is especially vulnerable if your filters are dirty. Many allergens and other particulate that the return duct pulls into your home can cause breathing issues that if left unchecked can lead to severe respiratory discomfort. We can install the correct filter for your AC unit and set up a regular schedule of upkeep.

How Are Filters Rated?
AC filters are rated by the minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) and they range from 1 to 16. The higher the MERV rating, the more dust and debris the filter can remove. Don’t fall into the trap of purchasing the highest MERV rated filter available. Check with us at Mountain Air Cooling and Heating before you buy or install one yourself. Very high MERV rated filters are only suitable for large AC systems. Generally, a MERV rating between 8 and 11 is just about right for most homes – any higher can cause stress on the motor.
Why is My AC Unit Operating Inefficiently?
The main reasons for inefficient AC operation:
● A dirty air filter
If you can hear that your air conditioning blower is on but you can’t feel any airflow, you probably have a dirty air filter. We can change it for you and keep the air flowing.
● Improper refrigerant charge
Older AC units were charged with R-22, a hydrochlorofluorocarbon that was ozone-depleting. An improper amount – or leaking – R-22 is not only bad for your AC system but it is also bad for the environment. Chlorine-free R410A refrigerant is used in the more modern ACs we install. We can check that your system is charged per manufacturers’ specs.
● Obstructed or Lost Air Flow
Airflow that is obstructed or not leaving your ducts at all can also be a problem as the cool air is most probably being lost inside your walls. If your filter is not getting dirty at all we can check to see where your cool air is being lost.
If left too long, a dirty filter can really undermine your air conditioner’s efficiency. The air in your home contains dust, pollen, bacteria, mold spores, and animal hair, which have all been linked to respiratory problems.
